Napili Bay is the smallest of the three beaches we shoot on West Maui, and the one people fall for hardest. It is a tight crescent with lava points at either end, a steep berm of sand, and a sunset that lines up straight out of the mouth of the bay for part of the year. That geometry is also why it rewards planning. A family that walks down at 6:30 in July gets a completely different beach than one that arrives at 4:30 in December.

Quick Details:
- Best light: the 30 minutes before sunset, which lands between 5:45 p.m. in mid-November and 7:10 p.m. in mid-July
- Parking: the County of Maui lists zero parking stalls at the Napili Place beach access, so most families walk down from their condo
- Best fit: couples and small families — the sand narrows at high tide, which suits the Quick Beach Portrait session — 20 minutes, up to 4 guests.
- What to wear: mid-tones over bright white, because dark lava rock frames both ends of the bay
- Sunset moves: in June the sun drops over Molokaʻi; by December it sets over Lānaʻi, about 50 degrees to the left
The best light is the half hour before sunset, and that clock moves 85 minutes across the year
Book the last 30 minutes before sunset. On West Maui that window swings by nearly an hour and a half depending on the month: sunset falls around 5:45 p.m. in mid-November, 6:36 p.m. in mid-March, and as late as 7:10 p.m. in mid-July, per U.S. Naval Observatory sun data for this coastline. Golden light starts about half an hour ahead of those times, and there is usable color for another 20 minutes after the sun is gone.
The direction changes too. Late June sunsets sit near 296 degrees, which puts the sun over Molokaʻi, roughly 23 miles across the Pailolo Channel. Late December swings to about 245 degrees — over Lānaʻi instead. Around the equinoxes, the sun drops into the open channel between the two islands, which is the cleanest horizon of the year.
Napili has the tightest access of West Maui's three photo beaches
There is no beach parking lot. The County of Maui’s shoreline access inventory lists the Napili Place public right-of-way as a paved access with zero stalls — compare that to 43 at Kapalua and 102 at D.T. Fleming. Families staying at the Napili Bay condos walk down; everyone else gets dropped off or parks legally nearby and walks in.
Build in 15 minutes of buffer. Maui hosted 229,197 visitors in June 2026 according to state tourism data, and plenty of them want the same sunset you do.
The lava points at both ends change which colors photograph well
Skip stark white. Napili’s two rock points and the wet sand at the tide line are dark, so bright white tends to blow out against them while faces stay dim. Soft mid-tones hold up far better — sage, dusty blue, oatmeal, warm tan, faded coral.
The bay funnels wind, which is a gift for photos and a nuisance for anyone fighting their hair. Bring a tie. Every package includes outfit suggestions, and Alyssa will give you specific advice for your dates once you book.
A 20-minute session covers this bay without rushing
The Quick Beach Portrait — 20 minutes, 20 or more edited photos, up to 4 guests at $395 — is the right size for Napili. We meet on the sand about 30 minutes before sunset. The first few minutes are walking shots at the south end, where the sand is widest and the rocks give the frame depth. Then group portraits with the bay behind you, then whatever the kids decide to do, which is usually the run toward the water that ends up being everyone’s favorite image.
The last five minutes belong to the sun — silhouettes against the channel, and the color that follows. Your edited gallery arrives within 4 to 6 days, so you can send it to family while you are still on the island. Additional guests are $25 each, but past eight people, the wider sand at D.T. Fleming is the easier call.

FAQ
What time should we schedule family photos at Napili Bay?
Start about 30 minutes before sunset — roughly 5:15 p.m. in November and December, 6:05 p.m. in March, and 6:40 p.m. in June and July. Sunrise sessions are the quieter alternative, with the beach nearly empty.
Is there parking at Napili Bay?
Not at the beach itself. The County of Maui’s shoreline access inventory lists no parking stalls at the Napili Place access, so plan to walk down from your condo, get dropped off, or park legally nearby.
What should we wear for photos at Napili Bay?
Coordinated, not matching, in soft mid-tones — sage, dusty blue, tan, oatmeal. Bright white washes out against the dark lava rock at both ends of the bay. Bare feet are encouraged.
How many people can we bring to a Napili Bay session?
Up to 4 guests on the Quick Beach Portrait, 8 on the Signature Family Session, and 20 on the Large Ohana Session. Additional guests are $25 each. Groups over eight are usually happier on the wider sand at D.T. Fleming.
What happens if it rains during our Napili Bay session?
We shoot anyway most of the time. West Maui showers pass quickly and often leave dramatic light behind them. If conditions genuinely will not work, we will reach out to shift the time or reschedule.
